Newborn Screening (NBS) is a test that involves testing of infants at birth for certain genetically linked metabolic disorders which may affect baby's physical, mental and intellectual development.

This panel tests for 5 analytes viz TSH, G-6-PD, 17OHP, IRT and Galactose as recommended by IAP (Indian Academy of Pediatrics).

NATIONAL POLICY ON RARE DISEASE 2021 :

Newborn Screening (NBS) is the best example of secondary prevention in which the babies are screened within few days of birth before symptoms of the disease manifest and treatment is initiated which prevents morbidity and mortality. In the developed world NBS is being offered for many rare disorders particularly the treatable ones(e.g., LSDs, SCID) apart from the common disorders.

17-OHP : Detects Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) which is genetic disorders that affect the adrenal glands.

IRT : Quantitative determination of human immunoreactive trypsinogen(IRT) used as a screening test for cystic fibrosis (CF)

G6PD : Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency is a genetic disorder which affects red blood cells and causes red blood cells to break down prematurely leading to hemolytic anaemia.

Galactose : Determines free galactose and galactose liberated from the cleavage of the galactose– 1-phosphate

hTSH : Quantitative determination of human thyrotropin for congential hypothyroidism (CH)
